How to check the purity of turmeric powder?

Turmeric is a popular spice used in many dishes. It gives a yellow colour and has a solid flavour to it. Consumed as it is or added to other foods such as curries, soups, and biscuits, turmeric powder is used in various skin products such as soaps and shampoos. The popularity of turmeric has increased over the years due to its medicinal properties and being an excellent source of antioxidants that helps fight free radical damage caused by environmental pollutants that cause premature ageing and skin cancer, among other chronic diseases.

Due to its rising popularity and demand, many fake variants of turmeric powder are available in the market today. Therefore, you must know whether a turmeric powder is pure.

  1. Test-1

Take a small portion of the turmeric powder into a glass bowl and add some water to it. Stir well and let it sit for 2 minutes. See if adulterants are floating on top of the water.

The powder is fake if you see impurities floating in the water. This is because turmeric is insoluble in water, but contaminants added to it are soluble in water.

As you add more and more water, if you notice no change in colour, there are no soluble impurities present in this sample of the powder.

If your sample does not dissolve entirely and remains granular, then it’s likely that there are soluble adulterants present in your sample. Again, because these adulterants are soluble in water, they will dissolve entirely upon the addition of enough water.

  1. Test-2

There are various ways to check the quality of powdered turmeric. The best way to test for fake turmeric is by using the “pinch” test.

  • Take a pinch of your turmeric and sprinkle it on a small plate.
  • Add some water to this mixture, so it becomes damp but not wet too! If your mixture turns pinkish, some chalk is mixed with your powder, which means that you are consuming chalk along with your food items when you consume these foods made out of this particular type of powdered spice mix.

Why should you test powdered groceries, especially spices?

Groceries are the essential commodities that everyone uses. Knowing whether they are pure and free of chemicals is essential. Everyone can’t grow their food independently, so sourcing your groceries from a trusted and reputed brand is crucial.

Exclusive products are relatively easier to check for purity because they are discernible, while the same is not the case with powdered products. People tend to do a lot of mixing, especially in expensive products like spices, to earn some unwarranted profits. Ethics in business are lost on some people due to their profit motive. So, consumers should be aware of the nuances of the products they use and be proactive in testing them. A woke customer is always good because they take their responsibilities seriously and the necessary precautions rather than complaining later.
